Ignore Munya's NASA move at your own peril, analyst tells Jubilee

Peter Munya is a good strategist and will likely influence his supporters voting, a political analyst have said following his decision to join NASA.

The former Meru Governor and ex-chairman of the Council of Governors announced his move on Monday after a meeting with Opposition principals.

He said he will lead campaigns in Central ahead of NASA chief Raila Odinga's repeat race for the presidency.

But former Senator Kiraitu Murungi, who defeated him in the county chief race, said he has committed political suicide.

In an interview with The Star on Tuesday, political analyst Harrison Mithika said: "Munya's political opponents and Jubilee sympathisers must stop looking at his 'dead political career' which is not guaranteed by his association with Raila. They should find out what gains he comes with and how they will affect Uhuru's votes.

"Munya's supporters are busy and confidently praising and asking others to join him in NASA in the name of determining the political fate of the Ameru, calling it kuuma uthamakine (which loosely translates to 'leaving royalty').

"But his long-term opponents are busy criticising him saying he has killed himself politically instead of looking at how Uhuru will be affected negatively or the benefits he will gain. They should also be concerned that Munya's political future will brighten if Raila succeeds."

Mithika noted the electorate did not elect leaders based on tribes or clans but on their promises and abilities to deliver.

He said this is the reason Nyambene residents voted for PNU's Mugambi Imanyara, whom Munya campaigned for, instead of Jubilee Senator candidate Mithika Linturi.

This was also his explanation for why Imenti opted for Linturi, who was fronted by Kiraitu, and rejected Imanyara.

He added, therefore, that Kiraitu and Linturi will not have any influence in Nyambene as they had tough times campaigning there before the August 8 general election.

On the presidential election, the analyst said: "Raila had 55,000 votes in Meru and with good strategies by Munya, he is set to get between 150,000 to 200,000 or more."

He painted a grim picture for Jubilee where rigging claims and Kiraitu's sacking of county workers are concerned.

"If Munya manages to meet those families' fortunes, and promises to fight for them and cater for their interests as a principal in the proposed NASA government in case of a win, then count those votes and those of their extended families, former tender-preneuers and those who were to secure job in Munya's second term," he said.

But Mithika noted not all Munya supporters will feel obliged to back his choice presidential candidate.

"Politics is a game of interests for every politician and I can confidently say Munya is a game changer."

Munya had a total of 233,000 votes whn he vied on a PNU ticket while Mugambi managed 200,000. Kiraitu got 283,000 votes and Linturi 300,000.

The former Governor is expected to file a petition against Kiraitu on Wednesday. He claimed there were irregularities in the election, adding NASA helped him find evidence to support his claims.
