Nevada Governor Vetoes National Popular Vote Bill

by Ryan Hite (Washington, D.C.): Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak vetoed the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact bill (Assembly Bill 186) sent to him by the legislature earlier this month. This is surprising and wonderful news from a blue state. In a statement, he said the NPV compact would "diminish the role of smaller states like Nevada... ."

National Popular Vote would do exactly as the Governor fears. A few big cities (not even states) would essentially rule the United States.

"This is an excellent decision by a governor who is willing to be thoughtful on policy instead of blindly loyal to party," said Ed Martin, Phyllis Schlafly Eagles president. "Phyllis Schlafly Eagles works across the nation to fight the erosion of the Electoral College and our Constitution. We are grateful for the work of so many dedicated Nevadans who made their voices heard to their elected officials. We are particularly appreciate of our Nevada Phyllis Schlafly Constitution Center director, Vicki Dooling, for fighting against this awful legislation."

"Gov. Sisolak made an excellent choice that will benefit Nevada," said Vicki Dooling. "National Popular Vote is a sham that will weaken our electoral process."

ARRA News Service Editor: The NPVIC (a major scam) does not abolish the Electoral College, which requires amending the Constitution. Rather, by binding electors to vote for candidates achieving a plurality outside their own state, it achieves the results of a popular vote.
