DHS: 142% Spike in Illegal Families: ?Court Decisions Prevent Us from Detaining & Prosecuting?

by Craig Bannister: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Wednesday that the number of illegal alien family units apprehended in July increased 142% from July of last year and 29% fiscal year-to-date (Oct. 2017-July 2018).

In a statement announcing release of the July report, DHS Press Secretary Tyler Q. Houlton blamed the increase on court decisions that are preventing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and DHS from doing their jobs:
"The number of family units apprehended at the border remains high and their percentage of total crossings has increased as court decisions prevent us from detaining and prosecuting family unit adults. The inability to apply consequences to any law breaker ultimately threatens the safety and security of the nation and its communities."Compared to last month, the July 2018 apprehension total for illegal alien family units was virtually unchanged, while apprehensions of unaccompanied minors (UACs) and total apprehensions were both down, the July report notes:"July saw a decline of nearly 7 percent overall compared to June 2018. The largest decrease of nearly 23 percent stemmed from UAC apprehended between ports of entry. Family Units remained nearly flat with an overall less than 1 percent decline.

"Comparing July 2018 to July 2017, the overall numbers are up nearly 57 percent with the largest increase being Family Units which increased more than 142 percent year over year."

"For the Fiscal Year to Date FYTD 2018 compared to FYTD 2017 the numbers are up 16 percent for UAC, 29 percent for Family Units and overall the numbers are up almost 20 percent compared to this time last year."
