Government Workers Handed Victory from The Supreme Court

ARRA News Service: The U.S. Supreme Court piled even more great news on top of victories this week for free speech, pro-life, and immigration. The 5-4 decision in Janus v. AFSCME ruled that teachers, police officers, and all public employees cannot be forced to pay union dues or fees. This overturns a 41-year-old precedent, ruling that the First Amendment protects public employees from being required to support a private group whose views can (and often do) differ so greatly from their own.

The decision strikes down laws in more than 20 (mostly left-leaning) states, notably in California and New York, that require all public employees to pay a "fair share fee." The U.S. Supreme Court described such forced payments as "compelled speech."

Ed Martin, Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, siad, "This is a great decision and another great victory for the First Amendment. For too long, public sector employees have been tied to and forced to pay for organizations that are more about political action than workers' rights. It's high time the High Court struck down this noxious system."
