[VIDEO] Section of Sarit Centre mall on fire, no injuries reported

Part of Sarit Centre in Westlands, Nairobi is on fire.

Preliminary investigation points to an electric fault.

A cyber, chemist and a flight booking office on the ground floor have been affected, a G4S officer told the Star on Friday.

Shoppers who were thrown into disarray were asked to leave the premises as huge dark smoke were seen emanating from the shopping mall.

As others evacuated the building, some shoppers were seen taking pictures.

According to witnesses, at the first smell of smoke, the speakers were blazing, asking customers, shopkeepers, those having brunch and bank tellers to leave.

A star Journalist at the scene said people were evacuated fast as some opted to help the elderly. The fire was contained within 30 minutes.

People were seen in groups, Making frantic calls to ensure everyone was accounted for. The fire was later contained but the public were still barred from accessing the building.

Being so close to Westgate mall, where al Shabaab raided and killed people, the fire seemed to awaken old memories.

"We would like to inform all our tenants and shoppers that there was a small fire in one of our outlets on the ground floor which has now been contained," Sarit Centre said in a tweet.

It noted that there was no injuries reported.
