Florida Lawmakers Demand Removal Of Sheriff Scott Israel After Parkland Shooting

The Daily Grind
by April Kuhlman: The school shooting in Parkland, FL has exposed some disturbing behavior among Broward County police.

Three officers have already been suspended, one for failing to do anything useful during the shooting and two others for failing to check up on the perpetrator (Nikolas Cruz) after concerned callers warned that he was collecting weapons and said he wanted to "shoot up" a school.

"The failure of Sheriff Israel and his deputies during and after the horrific shooting…and their failures to intervene regarding Nikolas Jacob Cruz in the years, months, and days leading up to that shooting, are unacceptable and unforgivable," wrote Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran in a letter to Governor Rick Scott.

"Sheriff Israel failed to maintain a culture of alertness," continues the letter. "As a result of Sheriff Israel's failures, students and teachers died."

Corcoran's letter has over 70 signatures.

The Details
Sheriff Israel has largely shrugged off the criticism and says he will not voluntarily resign.

"Deputies make mistakes. Police make mistakes. We all make mistakes, but it's not the responsibility of the general or the president if you have a deserter," Israel told CNN's Jake Tapper.

In response to additional reports claiming at least three other Broward cops failed to enter the school during the shooting, Israel claimed he can only be responsible for what he knows.

"At this point, we have no reason to believe anyone acted incorrectly or correctly. That's what an investigation is," he said, referring to his office's investigation into matters surrounding the school shooting.

On Sunday, Governor Scott ordered a separate investigation into the police officers' response to the shooting "for there to be full accountability."

These investigations "will do nothing to bring back the 17 victims," writes FL State Rep. Bill Hager in a letter to the governor. "The sheriff was fully aware of the threat this individual presented to his community and chose to ignore it."
