Ngunjiri asks Maraga to protect him after verbal attacks over petition

Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has said it is wrong for the Kisii community and NASA to attack him for petitioning to remove Chief Justice David Maraga.

Kisii leaders slammed Ngunjiri, calling him the Opposition's project, while NASA chided the MP saying the petition is Jubilee's cover up for intimidating the judiciary.

But Ngunjiri has asked the Chief Justice to protect him from the verbal attacks.

"In April, the CJ told off President Uhuru Kenyatta for suggesting that Kisii's were in government because the Chief Justice is 'one of their sons'. Maraga was furious at having his position made into a political community issue," the MP said on Sunday.

"I am really hoping the CJ will come out publicly and defend me from those people saying my petition against him was an attach on the Kisii," Ngunjiri added.

The MP filed a 14-page petition before the Judicial Service Commission asking for Maraga's removal for "gross misconduct".

He accused the Chief Justice of being held hostage by NGOs following the Supreme Court ruling nullifying Uhuru's re-election.

Maraga is the chairperson of the JSC.

The Jubilee Party on Thursday, however, distanced itself from the petition as secretary general Raphael Tuju disowned the petition, saying it was not discussed by the party.

But during a meeting with Central Kenya leaders at Sagana State Lodge on Friday, Uhuru asked Ngunjiri to withdraw the petition, saying Jubilee Party’s focus should be on the repeat presidential election on October 17.

Ngunjiri agreed to withdraw the petition but said in tweet, “I stand by the grievances in the Maraga petition, but due to the political environment, I will not pursue it, for now.”
