When U.S. Is Threatened, We Take Action

ARRA News Service: Congressman French Hill (AR-02) released the following statement after supporting legislation that places sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea:"When countries directly threat our national security and weaken global stability, we take action. Today's bill addresses the failings of past administrations' policies by sanctioning Russia, Iran, and North Korea for their aggressive actions. As a member of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Terrorism and Illicit Finance, I was pleased that the bill also includes important provisions that enhance the anti-terrorism tools at the Department of the Treasury. This action demonstrates that America is returning to serve as an engaged world leader that takes action against corruption, gross violations of human rights, support for terrorism, illegal testing of ballistic missiles, and invasion of neighboring countries."Additional Background: Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, H.R. 3364.

Here are 10 reasons to support the bill:
  1. It sanctions Vladimir Putin and his oligarchs by targeting corruption, key sectors of the Russian economy – including arms sales and the exportation of oil and gas – and those responsible for gross human rights abuses.
  2. It targets anyone who contributes to the Iranian regime's ballistic missile program, which aims to develop missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
  3. It squeezes North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs by cutting off the Kim Jong Un regime's access to hard cash.
  4. It enshrines existing sanctions against Russia into law for its intervention in Ukraine and its cyberattacks against the United States and other democracies, as well as imposes new sanctions for propping up Syria's murderous Assad regime.
  5. It subjects Russian sanctions relief to Congressional review.
  6. It sanctions Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps for its support of terrorism, a direct threat to the U.S. and our allies, including Israel.
  7. It clarifies several key provisions in the original Senate bill that could have hurt American job creators and manufacturers and actually benefited Russian energy oligarchs.  This strengthens the bill by ensuring it hits its intended targets.
  8. It restricts North Korea's ability to engage in illicit trade by cracking down on its shipping industry and its access to international ports.
  9. It helps bolster energy security in Europe, and improves cooperation with our allies in order to counter Russian influence in Europe.
  10. It sanctions those who employ North Korean slave labor, a source of billions of dollars for the Kim regime.
