On November 9th, Prozac anyone?

by Dr. Jack Sternberg, Contributing Author: What can I say except Donald Trump "came through in a pinch" when it was do or die. His debate performance was everything we could have asked for and hoped he would achieve. I pray that he will be even better during the third and last debate.

I don't know how you feel about this presidential election cycle but for me it has been the equivalent of a daytime soap opera. In addition, it's as if it has been going on for as long as some of the classic soap operas.

It seems like every few days something new and salacious (that's a fancy word for lecherous, obscene and grossly indecent) is reported by either candidate and their political teams and PAC's. And if not by them, then by a spy, whistleblower, quisling and let's not forget Wikileaks. Internationally, Russia has been accused of attempting to sway the election. A fictional novel would rarely be this complicated and convoluted. If it were, it would be a best seller. But we all seem incapable of putting it away and ignoring what's going on.

We have reports of lewd comments, rapes, lies, exaggerations and in your face accusations of "pay for play" and endangering national security. People change their affiliations at a drop of a hat and break their pledges to the candidates. Does it get any worse than this? Or any better?

This year's Presidential election cycle has been better TV, radio and printed material than any fictional production ever produced. What TV show has ever had close to a 100 million viewers and then the second debate had about 68 million viewers. Even the Vice-Presidential debate was huge.

Despite everyone complaining about this election, it seems as if no one is willing to stop watching. We either can't stop talking about the two candidates or it's all we want to discuss. Both political camps and ideologies absolutely hate the other side's candidate. The election will probably be decided by independents and in addition, who and how many actually come out and vote.

I'll end with a prediction. Just like there is sometimes Post Partum Depression after the birth of a child, I expect the worst on the morning of Wednesday, November 9th. Almost half of the voters will be severely depressed if their candidate loses and severely angry at the winner who will now be President of the United States. The other half will be thrilled their candidate was elected.

The media gives this disparity a benign sounding word, Polarization. I believe it is more a schism as long, deep and wide as the Grand Canyon with little chance that the two edges (groups) will ever narrow the gap. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

So, on November 9th, Prozac anyone? I have my prescription pad ready and I have my pen.
