Police foil terror attack on Recce squad headquarters

Police have intercepted three AK 47 rifles and 178 bullets during a dawn operation targeting a former RECCE unit squad officer.

The Thursday morning raid targeted the officer suspected to have been radicalized and planning an attack at the GSU Recce headquarters in Ruiru.

The suspect, who is a highly trained hostage and rescue officer, managed to escape leaving behind the weapons.

Search for the ex cop said to be an al Shabaab sympathizer has been intensified after intelligence reports warned of a looming terror attack at the Recce headquarters.

The suspect has been identified in police documents as police constable Eric Ngethe Kanyingi, No 97861, who deserted his Job as an officer of the elite squad in 2014.

Detectives from the Ruiru police division on Wednesday raided a house said to be owned by the ex cop in Githurai 45 estate but did not find any weapons.

"We only found literature material that suggests that the man is radicalized," said a senior security official in Kiambu.

Police said the suspect has in the past been spotted at Riyadh Mosque which had previously been hit by allegations of radicalization further cementing suspicion by the police that the ex- cop was radicalized.

Police spokesman George Kinoti confirmed the recovery of the weapons and said officers are hunting for the suspect who is a well known criminal.

The latest findings come as a shocker after it emerged that suspected al Shabaab affiliates have penetrated security forces.
