Police rescue four children dressed in sacks, forced to fast, pray

Four children were rescued by police after they were locked up in their house in Mwingi and forced to pray and fast while wearing sacks.

The children, aged between seven and 16 years, had been locked up by their mother for the past week and kept from attending school.

Police were tipped off by neighbours who informed them that the family had been indoors for several days.

"We raided the house and broke it after the mother refused to open the door for us," Mwingi central police boss Gerald Barasa said on Thursday.

Jane Mwende, a mother of six, told police that she opted to dress and her children in rags to fast and pray as she was a widow, and KARI had failed to pay her husband's pension.

She said shortly after losing her husband in 2010, one of her sons was involved in a road accident.

The boy's breathing system was affected and he has been forced to use a pipe to assist his breathing.

She also said she has been unable to raise school fees for her children; one who is in secondary school at Kyome Girls, while the other three are schooling at Kasina Primary.

She added that another girl was sponsored this year to State House High.

Mwende is currently being held at Mwingi police station awaiting completion of police investigation.

The Children department is taking care of her children.
