Hillary Clinton was on ABC's "This Week" yesterday. Asked whether she agreed with Justice Scalia's decision in the 5-to-4 Heller case that declared the Second Amendment did in fact provide for an individual right to own a firearm for self-defense, Clinton answered, "If it is a constitutional right, then it, like every other constitutional right, is subject to reasonable regulation."
Notice how she began her answer -- "If." That indicates to me that she does not accept the view that there is an individual right to own guns. She then went on to suggest that it should be limited or regulated.
This is coming from a woman who can find no reasonable regulation for abortion, marriage or bathrooms. Clinton supports abortion-on-demand, even until the moment of birth, she supports men marrying other men and she supports allowing boys to use girls' bathrooms.
Host George Stephanopoulos also noted that Clinton once proposed a 25% sales tax on guns. Clinton responded that her proposal was in the context of recouping medical costs caused by violence.
That is very revealing. Her mindset was to punish law-abiding gun-owners with punitive taxes for the offenses of criminals.
Obama Blames The Right
Barack Obama waded into the San Jose controversy on Friday. Predictably, he blamed political violence on Republicans.
Speaking at a fundraising event in Miami, Obama condemned the violent left-wing demonstrators who attacked Trump supporters at a rally last week. But he added, "It is very important for us to . . . not slip into some of the bad habits that currently manifest themselves in the other party." Obama warned progressives to avoid resorting "to some of the same kinds of tactics they've [Republicans] been engaging in for quite some time."
What is he talking about? Virtually all political violence is coming, and historically has come, from the left, not the right.
The Occupy Wall Street movement developed a lengthy rap sheet. Polling found that its supporters were prone to violence.
How about the Black Lives Matter movement and the Ferguson and Baltimore riots? It is delusional to suggest that this kind of political violence is coming from the right.
David French Stands Down
National Review columnist and decorated Iraq war veteran David French is standing down. French will not be an independent candidate for president in 2016. In a column posted Sunday night, French wrote that he was not the right person "given the timing."
Nevertheless, I found it curious that he once again suggested Mitt Romney could win such a race.
I don't get it. How would a Mitt Romney presidency address the fundamental causes of what has created the current political mood?
Democrats are all in for transforming America. Liberals are the new moderates in that party. The socialists are taking over. Meanwhile, the leadership of the right seems wholly incapable of coming to terms with this reality.
Have French and others forgotten that Mitt Romney couldn't attack Obamacare because he was too busy defending Romneycare? Have they forgotten his surrender to Candy Crowley?
When he tried to prove his conservative bona fides, he described himself as "severely conservative."
For all his personal qualities, Romney's political ineptness gave us four more years of Barack Obama. Mitt Romney is not the guy to save us from Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Here's one personal story just to drive home the point.
Dr. James Dobson and I tried to encourage Romney to connect with conservative voters. Our meeting with the governor happened as the Chick-fil-A controversy erupted across the country. Hundreds of thousands of people were standing in line to prove that they stood with the company and biblical marriage.
Dr. Dobson and I explained to Governor Romney that he needed those people standing in line for him Election Day. I suggested that he go to a Chick-fil-A and buy 100 sandwiches. He could say that he was standing up for economic liberty at a time when many left-wing mayors were threatening to block construction of Chick-fil-A restaurants.
But Romney looked at us as if we had just landed from a distant planet. He did not take our advice. When asked about his position on the controversy, he said his campaign wasn't about that issue.
Those recommending Romney are once again falling into the trap that has bedeviled conservatives in recent years. Because we are concerned about the coarsening of our politics, we are looking for nice guys. The problem is that the nice guys aren't up to the fight against the leftist thugs who want to fundamentally transform our country.
