Nairobi women urge Waiguru to vie for Governor in 2017, ex-CS says she will pray about it

Anne Waiguru, who requested lighter duties after resigning from her post as Devolution CS, has been urged to vie for Nairobi Governor.

Two hundred women leaders drawn from Nairobi county's 17 constituencies endorsed Waiguru for the position during their meeting with her at Ufungamano House on Wednesday.

They pleaded with her to join the race ahead of the 2017 general election so as to continue implementing projects she initiated under the National Youth Service.

Laura Ongwae said: "Time has come for women to unite and decide on the political destiny of this country. For many years men have misused women. We have decided Waiguru will vie for the seat."

Waiguru thanked the women for standing with her saying "that is why I am here today".

"I will take some time to pray and think about it then call a meeting to announce the way forward. I came to say 'thank you' but I am leaving with a lot more," she said.

Waiguru said she will work with women in the meantime. She said she will visit Embakasi at the weekend, and Kamukunji and Kibra at later dates.

The former CS said she is ready to team up with sacked Environment minister Evans Ondieki who also attended the meeting. Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero sacked Ondieki days after reshuffling his government.

Waiguru cited health reasons when she resigned on November 21, 2015, amid sustained allegations of corruption in the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.
