I saw masked man shoot Muchai, says newsvendor

A news vendor yesterday said he saw a man shoot Kabete MP George Muchai and his aides before dawn on February 7 last year.

Ronald Siango was testifying before Nairobi chief magistrate Daniel Ogembo.

He said Muchai had been his customer for more than seven years.

Siango said Muchai called him by his nickname "Kisii" and asked for four newspapers, Nation, the Star, Standard and Nairobian.

But before he could deliver the newspapers, a white car blocked Muchai's vehicle, Siango said.

Suddenly, a masked man came out of the vehicle and sprayed Muchai with bullets.

Siango said this occurred at the roundabout of Uhuru Highway and Kenyatta Avenue.

He said the man fired about eight bullets, while he ran for safety towards Parliament Buildings.

Siango said he lost two teeth while scampering for safety.

He said the attack happened at 2.40am.

Siango said Muchai was coming from University of Nairobi roundabout and heading to town.

Muchai, his two bodyguards Samuel Kalikia and Samuel Matanta and driver Stephen Wambugu were shot dead on the night of February 6 and 7 last year on Kenyatta Avenue.

Seven people accused of killing the MP and his aides have been charged with violent robbery, but have all denied it.

They are Raphael Gachii, alias Kim Butchcher, Kimani Anyonyi, alias Musti, Stephen Lipapo, alias Chokore, Erick Isabwa, alias Chairman, Jane Wanjiru, alias Shiro, Margaret Njeri and Simon Gichamba.

Siango is the ninth prosecution witness in the case.

The seven also face the murder charge at the High Court.

Siango said while hiding near Parliament Buildings, he could still hear the shooting.

He recorded a statement with police two weeks later after being treated at a city hospital.

Seven suspects have been charged with robbery with violence in an incident where Muchai and his driver and two aides were killed.

The suspects have denied charges of robbery with violence.

The magistrate advised the relatives of the accused to stop issuing threats to the prosecution witnesses.

Prosecutor Daniel Karuri told the court he had received information from investigating officers that some relatives of the accused are threatening the witnesses so they don't give evidence.

The seven are accused of robbing Michael Gituto of his car and other property all worth Sh416,000.

They are also accused of robbing Gladys Waithera of her car and other property worth Sh600,000 on the same night at Green Belt estate in Wangige, Kiambu county.

They are accused of robbing Irene Wambui her property worth Sh15,000 on the same night.

The hearing continues this morning.
