The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has impounded at least 60 Mwiki Sacco public transport vehicles after one of these mini-buses crashed a pedestrian to death on Friday October 9, 2015.
In notice to the public, NTSA said the vehicles have assembled at the Vehicle Inspection Unit in Nairobi's industrial area.
The NTSA will inspect all the Sacco's fleet to determine their roadworthiness as well as the suitability of its drivers and conductors.
On October 9, a pedestrian by the name Cecilia Gicheha was involved in a fatal accident when the driver of a Mwiki Sacco Isuzu minibus with registration number KBS 389Y reversed.
"The driver of KBS 389Y reversed when the pedestrian was crossing the road and sandwiched her against the Isuzu minibus registration KCE 531 Y. The victim sustained serious chest injuries and was rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital where she died while undergoing treatment," NTSA director general Francis Meja said on Monday October 12, 2015.
The driver of KBS 389Y is to appear in court on Tuesday October 13. Besides, his driving and PSV licenses were revoked with immediate effect.
"The authority wishes to remind all PSV operators of their responsibility to vet their drivers to ensure that anyone allowed to drive public service vehicles possesses the right level of skills, training and attitude," Meja further stated.
