Hero Radio presents *whoop* *whoop* the selector dj Goldierocks, an overview of all that is exciting and fresh in music. Goldierocks presents the weekly global radio show The Selector with an audience estimated to be in excess of 4 million listeners, it is not MTV or the BBC that gives her a giant following – even though she has just appeared as a holiday stand-in on Radio 1. It's with the British Council, the body for promoting culture overseas. Goldierocks, real name Sam Hall, presents The Selector, a two-hour weekly show created by the council to highlight new British bands.
It is recorded in London and then broadcast to more than 30 countries. The impact can be staggering. Alternative rock band Dinosaur Pile Up played to 3,500 people in Mexico City after being featured even though they had never been to the country before. Front man Matt Big land said the show was a great link between British music and the rest of the world. "It's a killer show," he said. Artist Jamie Won had his single Lady Luck play-listed on stations across Kazakhstan and indie pop band Thomas Tantrum was approached to tour in Spain. Goldierocks began as a music journalist after a theatre degree at Goldsmiths College but then had a go at DJ-ing.
The Selector is syndicated to 44 countries around the world including Mexico, China, Colombia, Israel, Poland, Malawi, Hungary, Indonesia, Zambia, South Africa, Kenya, Bulgaria and Turkey.
