Africa cross country junior champion Moses Mukono is relishing the chance to represent the country at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships set for Guiyang, China, next week.
Mukono, who graduated into the senior ranks this year, said he is looking forward to a successful debut at the world stage.
Mukono's graduation came with it the completion of his 'O' level education at Riruta Central Secondary School and feels there has been enough time to prepare unlike previous years where he had to juggle between class and the training ground.
"I used to do well when I was a student and I look forward to even better performance this time round. I am done with class work although I am feeling too much pressure considering not many athletes have successfully managed to do well upon their rise to senior ranks," said Mukono.
Speaking at the team's residential training camp at St Mark's Teacher's Training College in Kigari, Embu, Mukono said: "I want to bring a medal irrespective of the colour as I have had enough time to prepare for this championship. I failed to impress in Poland in 2013 and that's why I badly need the world cross country medal," added Mukono.
He will be joined by world silver medalist Leonard Barsoton, Japan-based Bedan Karoki, Joseph Kiptum and world half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor as they battle for honours against the rest of the world especially Ethiopia and Uganda.
Mukono said his performance will greatly shape his athletics future as he also plots a go at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing in August as well as the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
He has previously posted brilliant performances in local competitions only to fall flat at the global stage.
"I finished 11th at the 2013 Word cross-country championships in Poland due to the bad weather conditions. I will give it my best shot and I believe I am upto the task," added Mukono.
