4 killed in New Year road mishap at Maanzoni

MAANZONINAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 1 – Four people were killed and three others seriously injured in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at Maanzoni, Thursday morning.

Machakos Deputy Police Chief Joseph ole Leina told Capital FM News that police were yet to establish the cause of the accident but says the driver could have been overtaking when the vehicle veered off the road and rolled.

“All indications show that the driver was trying to overtake when the accident occurred,” he stated.

He says two people died on spot while the rest succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at the Machakos level 5 Hospital.

He has described the area as a black spot and called on motorists to be careful on the section.

“That area is a black spot… people should be careful while driving along that route,” he appealed.

The seven are said to have gone to the Machakos People Park to usher in the New Year and were on their way to back Nairobi.

Leina says the three who were injured have been transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital “upon the request of their family.”
