Controversial video Nishike is Kenya's Most viewed Video in 2014! @sautisol


The controversial Nishike music video by Kenyan boy band Sauti Sol (left) has been named the most viewed music video of the year by YouTube.

The video, released in April, elicited mixed reactions from its audience with some viewers labelling it "obscene and immoral" due to its heavy sexual content.

"Art is about expression and for us, it was not just making a song that someone will listen to and be content, but something that would express the same in visuals. Yes we are getting nasty stares, but we've been like 'don't hate the player'," Sauti Sol's Bien Aime Baraza told Word Is.

The band's Sura Yako song featuring the Sarakasi Dancers came in third, after Willy Paul's Tam Tam Remix featuring Size 8. However, Open Your Eyes Kenya, an advert by the Safaricom Foundation emerged the country's most watched video of 2014.

The World is Ours, Coca-Cola's 2014 Fifa World Cup Anthem was second. Airtel Africa, keen on identifying and encouraging the growth of musical talent in Africa, pushed viewers to their video AirtelTRACE. They partnered with American rapper, Akon, to mentor one rising star from Africa.

Other music videos that made to the top 10 list includes Elani's Kookoo and Milele, Kioo by Jaguar, Barua by Bahati, Mfalme Wa Mapenzi by Sanaipei, Kitanzi by Willy Paul & Gloria Muliro and Prokoto by Victoria Kimani featuring Ommy Dimpoz & Diamond Platnumz.

The love tale of an Asian lady who defied her parents' order not to marry a Bukusu man that led to the creation of #MyBukusuDarling on social media was among the top 10 in the list of most watched videos.
