Protect maize farmers from import cartels

MAIZE prices have plummeted to Sh1,000 a bag in parts of the breadbasket North Rift in the face of cheap imports from Uganda. Kitale has been hit hardest, with traders crossing the border to buy maize in Uganda for as little as Sh800. Cartels have imported as many as 1.5 million bags for sale to the National Cereals and Produce Board's depots. Kenya's farmers stand to lose tens of millions of shillings. They have threatened to hold street protests if the Agriculture ministry does not reopen the NCPB depots immediately and buy their grain at Sh3,000 to stabilise prices and cut losses. Around...
