Democrat Support for Impeachment Drops 13%. “Against Impeachment” Leads in Poll Average for First Time.

Nancy Pelosi
by Erick Erickson: The media obsessed over the Fox News poll because it appears 50% of Americans favor impeaching the President in a poll by Fox News. Regular readers know not to look at individual polls, but instead look at the polling average. However, what's good for the goose is good for the gander and it is worth noting that in the latest CNN poll, support for impeachment from Democrats has collapsed 13% from 90% to 77%.

That's actually pretty striking in that more Republicans oppose impeachment than Democrats support it. Overall, support for impeachment is down 5% to 45%.

Importantly, the President's approval rating of 43% is stable, even as Quinnipiac's poll has the President's approval slightly higher at just above 44%, which is the highest it has ever been in that poll.

The key to finding out why Democrat support for impeachment has collapsed might be found in this data from CNN:

Among the 24% who say a Senate trial on the charges facing Trump would be at least somewhat likely to sway their views, 19% are currently undecided about impeachment and removal, 38% support it and 43% oppose it. About a third of Americans (32%) believe the impeachment inquiry will ultimately help Trump's reelection bid, while 25% say it will hurt his chances and 37% say it will make no difference. Also, for the first time, more voters are against impeachment than in favor of it in the polling average.

The Quinnipiac polling has been most interesting in that the trend has steadily moved against impeachment. It is at 6% more voters against it, holding steady from last week. At the end of November, it was a 3% margin against impeachment. At the end of October it was 2% more favoring impeachment.

The CNN and Quinnipiac polls come on the heels of polls from USA Today and NPR with majorities opposed to impeachment.
