Seven students die, 10 hospitalised in Moi Girls Nairobi inferno

Seven students have died at the Moi Girls, Nairobi after a fire broke in one of the dormitories on Saturday night.

10 others are hospitalized, two in critical condition.

According to Education CS Fred Matiang'i, the fire broke out at 2 am.

"The cause of the fire is yet to be known. Police and the school administration are conducting a roll call to identify the dead. We have commenced probe but those culpable will be prosecuted," The CS stated.

Matiang'i said the school will be closed for two weeks to ensure a conclusive investigation into the incident.

"The school will be closed for two weeks but we will also make special plans to have the Form Four students back in a week's time so that they can continue with their revision," he said.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko who was at the scene condoled with the families of those who lost their children.

He said the county government will help those affected as well as in renovation of the school.

"We will work with the national government to stand with those who have lost their loved ones because this is a very hard and emotional state," Sonko said.
