Chebukati releases election schedule, asks Treasury for funds

IEBC has released timelines for October 17 vote, urges Treasury to release funds for elections.

"A draft budget has been presented to the treasury for consideration. We expect expeditious allocation of funds," chairman Wafula Chebukati said in a statement on Friday

Chebukati said the funds will allow the electoral agency to implement key tasks ahead especially those related to ICT and training.

He said they have prepared timelines with key milestones leading to the election.

The milestone include; a revised elections results framework, certification of the register of voters, upgraded technology for election, recruitment, training and deployment, voter education and election day operations.

Chebukati further asked candidates to deploy experienced and committed agents to all parts of the country before October 3.

"Candidates must ensure their agents are well versed with technology and are urged to finalise the list for the polling stations, constituency, tallying centre and the national tallying centre," he said.

IEBC TO HIRE FROM DATABASE

Chebukati noted that they will hire 40,883 officers, 40,883 deputy presiding officers, 135,038 clerks, 580 ICT Support and 290 constituency logistics assistants.

Before the August 8 vote, IEBC sought to recruit 41,940 temporary staff to buttress its capacity during the voter verification exercise.

The temporary jobs included 290 constituency ICT clerks, 1,450 register of voters verification assistants and 40,200 voter verification clerks.

"The officers shall be drawn from our existing database of applicants excluding those that may have committed irregularities during the august 8 elections," Chebukati said.

Chebukati said the commission plans to engage with stakeholders on a continuous basis to ensure that Kenyan voters are informed and involved in all preparations for the elections,

Campaigns for round two of the presidential election officially began on September 6 and will end on October 15.

Chebukati's gazette notice stated campaigns will run from 7am to 6pm and end on October 15, 48 hours before the vote.
