Thousands of Muslim faithful turned up in the ancient Lamu Island on Friday to mark the end of the week-long Maulid celebrations.
Led by Lamu Governor Issa Timammy and top Islamic leaders from East Africa, there was a procession to the main cemetery in Lamu for special prayers before moving to Riyadh mosque for the main celebrations.
Wearing elegant Islamic dress, the faithful played Maulid songs to mark the birth of Prophet Mohammed. The ceremony dates back over 1,400 years.
The relatives of Shariff Alhabib Swaleh, the founder of the Maulid celebrations in Lamu, were present, including his son Alhabib Hussein Ahmed Badawy and grandson Mudhar Ahmed Badawy.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also joined the faithful in celebrating the auspicious occasion.
There was also a special guest from Tanzania, Mufti Abubakar Zebeir, a renowned Islamic religious leader.
All faithful marched from the cemetery to the sea front before passing through Lamu’s narrow streets, bringing business to a standstill.
