Lupita Nyong'o's Mysterious Role In Star Wars Revealed

Kenyan born - American based actress,Lupita Nyong'o's character in the Force Awakens has finally been revealed.

In fact, Maz Kanata was revealed when the official poster was unveiled on last month - but fans were never told who it was.

The tiny yellow alien wearing curious goggles can be spotted nestled between astromech droids new and old, BB-8 and R2-D2.

On Thursday, director JJ Abrams confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the diminutive creature is indeed Kanata, who the 32-year-old actress will play via motion capture.

'Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time,' he revealed. 'She's lived over a thousand years.

'She's had this watering hole for about a century, and it's like another bar that you'd find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.'

The goggles, they do nothing: The diminutive alien wears goggles over eyes that have special meaning and power, according to the director

He also explained that the eyes hiding behind those goggles have special meaning and power.

'I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do,' he continued. 'I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you'll see how it plays out.'

Lupita herself revealed she was enamoured with the particular character trait.

'As an actor for films, your eyes are a lot of the way you communicate anyway,' she said. 'So it was definitely a gift to have that be the means to her magic as a motion-capture character.'

Maz has yet to be fully seen on screen, with the actress only briefly glimpsed in her motion capture getup in the behind the scenes reel released for this year's Comic Con.

The Force Awakens will be the Mexi-Kenyan's first foray into motion capture, but luckily she had the authority on hand to help her out: Andy Serkis - who has played Gollum, King Kong and Caesar in the Planet Of The Apes reboot - co-stars as the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke, another CGI character who has yet to be seen.

'The biggest advice he gave me, that was so important to hold on to, is a motion-capture character you develop the same way as any other,' Lupita shared. 'You have to understand who the character is and what makes them who they are.'
